Good for you!!! I don't know Spades, in my family we always play a game with dominoes called "42" on holidays. It involves bidding, bluffing, and often relying on your partner to win. And yes, it is awesome when you & your partner are in sync. The place you went with the gaming tables sounds like a good alternative to video games and much more fun! And you don't sound so disappointed in yourself. Remember when a door closes, turn around and you will find an open window. Take care.
